If you've lived here long enough, you know the summer rhythm without a calendar. What you may not have noticed is that this year's rhythm has drifted. The pier, usually the gravitational center of an HB August, is quietly stalled on its own restaurant deal. Meanwhile the north-end blocks, Main Street, Atlanta Avenue, Old World Village, and the sand just south of the pier, have absorbed almost every new opening and every large event on the August board.
That is the through-line for this month. The action moved off the pier, and the map of a good Huntington Beach weekend moved with it.
What Opened While the Pier Waited
Four openings are worth knowing about, because they cover the range from a full-service sit-down to a $6 burger stop.
- Champagnes Kitchen, 200 Main Street. The Newport Beach breakfast-lunch-dinner shop opened its second location in the former IHOP at Steve Daniel Plaza. Owners Matt and Winnona Tobey aimed to open in the first week of May 2026, with a soft launch before a full weekend schedule. The new space is set up for counter-service breakfast and lunch, full-service dinner, a full espresso bar, and a six-seat liquor bar. If you already know Champagnes from Newport, the HB menu carries the dinner program over with adjustments for the local crowd.
- The Habit Burger & Grill, 8965 Atlanta Ave. Habit opened to the public on Monday, May 4, 2026. Dine-in and takeout only at the counter, with delivery routed through the app. Useful to know if you're coming off the beach at Magnolia and don't want to fight downtown parking.
- Tacos Los Cholos, Downtown. Tacos Los Cholos started as a small pop-up, grew into an Orange County taqueria with brick-and-mortar locations in Anaheim and Fullerton, and added a Downtown Huntington Beach location.
- Lōrea at Paséa Hotel & Spa. Paséa opened Lōrea as part of a $5 million culinary program renovation, with locally sourced ingredients and handcrafted cocktails. It sits far enough from Main Street that it functions as its own destination rather than a downtown stop.
The pattern under those four is simple. Three of the four are within a short walk of the same six blocks. The fourth is a hotel restaurant. Nothing new opened on the pier itself, and there is a reason for that.
The Pier Restaurant, In Case You've Been Wondering
The end-of-pier space that used to be Let's Go Fishing has been quiet for years, and the story behind it is the sort of thing residents notice more than visitors. Former Mayor Keith Bohr returned to city council earlier this year to receive a $1.3 million bond for his pier project, meant to protect the city in case the project falls through. The restaurant was originally scheduled to open in May 2022, but permitting and documentation delays pushed the development back for years. Bohr's team has been working through three state agencies, the OC Health Department, and various city departments.
The current target, according to comments made at the January 20 council meeting, is an opening by the end of summer. Treat that as aspirational rather than scheduled. If you've been telling out-of-town family that you'd take them to eat on the pier this trip, it is still a table at Ruby's or nothing on the pier itself.
The August Calendar, Sorted by Where You Actually Park
The reason to sort by parking is that HB's summer events cluster in three distinct zones, and the choice between them is really a choice about traffic and how far you want to walk with a folding chair.

A few notes on what those look like in practice.
The Lexus US Open of Surfing is the one that reshapes downtown for the first weekend of the month. It runs through August 2 on the beach south of the Huntington Beach Pier, is free to attend, and includes professional surfing, live music, food, games, demonstrations, and athlete appearances; the area around the pier and downtown will be busy, so arriving early gives you more time to find a viewing spot. If you live south of Adams, the pedestrian shortcuts through the neighborhoods behind PCH are faster than the lot lines that day.
Bier Fest at Old World Village is the quieter counter-programming. Old World Village hosts Bier Fest from August 8 through 16, admission is free, the event is open to all ages, and German-style food, imported beer, live music, and family entertainment give it a cheerful weekend feel. Old World's footprint is small, which means you can stop in for an hour and be home before dinner. It is the most under-used option on this list for people who already live in HB.
Darker Waves is the one to know about if you have not been paying attention. The festival is scheduled for August 14 through 16 at Huntington Beach City Beach, per Bandsintown's 2026 listings. Expect road impact on PCH and the residential blocks nearest the beach for the full weekend, not just show hours.
Surfin' Sundays at Pier Plaza remains the low-lift standard. Pier Plaza is a public gathering spot with stone steps, cement seats, and a tiled mural wall, with concerts held at the open-air amphitheater on a regular basis during summer months and a grass lawn above the seating. If you have a dog and a folding chair, that is the whole plan.
Reading the Restaurant Map
There is a small lesson buried in the Champagnes and Habit openings that is easy to miss when you read them as separate stories. Both took over spaces that had defined use for years, IHOP at Steve Daniel Plaza and a prior tenant on Atlanta. Neither opened a new footprint. That is what a mature retail market looks like when it is functioning well. The best HB corners are not sitting empty, and new operators are paying to enter them rather than looking for cheaper edges.
For a resident, the practical version of that observation is that the interesting new places to eat this year are inside your normal errand loop rather than off it. You do not have to drive to Costa Mesa or Newport. You have to notice what changed hands on streets you already use.
A Resident's August Weekend, Roughed Out
If you're planning around this month, the mid-August window has the cleanest overlap. Bier Fest opens Friday the 8th and Darker Waves runs the following weekend, so a Saturday of German food at Old World and a Sunday of the concert series at Pier Plaza is a full weekend without needing to leave the city. Breakfast at Champagnes if you want counter service, dinner at Lōrea if you want a hotel-restaurant setting, tacos downtown if you want to walk it off.
The first weekend belongs to the surf contest whether you attend or not, since the traffic pattern reshapes itself around it. Plan errands north of Warner, or plan to walk.
